SEE QI 8 E-trainings: Participative and empowering virtual collaboration

New concepts, methods and skills

SEE QI 8 E-training programme on virtual collaborations:

The e-trainings enable participants to successfully organise and run virtual collaborations such as meetings, events, trainings, consultancies or team work. The SEE QI 8 e-training program offers three stand-alone e-trainings: on planning and running effectively online events, on leadership in extended virtual collaborations, and on impactful e-trainings and remote consulting. They are generally geared toward different target groups and tackle complementary challenges. However, for certain people, who simultaneously perform several roles, more than one e-training could be relevant. Each e-training is three hours long. In each e-training, participants will reflect on their past experiences and learn new concepts, methods and skills that are needed to effectively work and cooperate virtually. The e-trainings follow a hands-on and experience-based methodology. Different virtual methods and techniques will be demonstrated by way of conducting the e-training itself and interactively connecting with the participants.

Background and Motivation:

Virtual collaboration is here to stay: It became the new normal as the COVID-19 pandemic became protracted and people adapted their working modes to meet their work objectives and deadlines. There are some positive effects of this shift such as cost- efficiency, flexibility or climate friendliness that will motivate people to partially continue virtual collaboration in the future, especially in international cooperation. At the same time, virtual col- laboration comes with its own challenges in addition to exacerbating some from the analogue mode of collaboration. Just as we are not born project coordinators, trainers or facilitators, we also need to learn how to collaborate virtually. After months of remote working, teams need to be kept motivated. Events such as trainings or conferences, which were postponed because of con- tact and travel restrictions, now have to take place. Although we partly work from home, con- nected by video conferencing or other tools, we would like to be as professional and effective as we were in the analogue world. Digital tools do not replace social interaction, but, if thoughtfully used, can enable us to get in touch with each other despite distances. In fact, we learned that much more can be achieved virtually in terms of content and social interaction than originally thought and that there are even some advantages from virtual collaboration. However, switching successfully to the virtual space requires a changed or at least more aware mindset as well as new skills and competencies. Current improvements in virtual performance will increase effectiveness of work and collaboration in post-pandemic times and building back better as a result.
