Interlaboratory comparison (ILC) for small volumes

Timeframe

3/2019 - 12/2019 -  COMPLETED

Coordinator/ Submitting institution + WB6 Partners

Ernad Borovac/ Institute of Metrology, BiH

Albania: General Directorate of Metrology

Additional WB6 National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) if interested and technically capable for the task

Need for transnational action

The motivation for the project is the objective to confirm calibration and measurement capabilities (CMC) in small volumes at international level in the framework of the CIPM Mutual recognition Arrangement (MRA).The traceability for measurement in small volumes in WB6 countries is relevant for traceability of volume measurements in testing and medical laboratories as well as in the health sector.

According to the rules of the international metrology community, it is necessary to compare CMC between NMIs before submitting them into the bipm ky comparison database KCDB. The regional metrology organisation EURAMET encourages opening comparisons for more additional members.

Objective

National Metrology Institutes achieve mutual and international recognition of their calibration services for small volumes.

Project implementation

Two artefacts (micropipette and flask < 1l)) will be calibrated in the pilot NMI, which has CMCs in KCDB BIPM at higher level and in the participating countries (Albania, BiH, if interest additional WB6 NMI). The report will be established by the pilot NMI. The ILC will be registered as EURAMET project, in order to be eligible for CMC claims.

The results of calibrations will be compared and if satisfactory, the participating institutes will claim CMCs in the BIPM KCDB.

Expected impact

This planned ILC is a further step for the international recognition of the services provided by WB6 NMIs and the mutual recognition of their measurement capabilities. . New CMCs are of benefit for laboratories, which can ensure their traceability within their own country. Traceable small volumes measurements improve the work of WB6 laboratories and the health sector in general.
